Self-tan stains on a white towel come out if they are treated cold and before any heat: rinse and soak in cold water, degreaser on the area, another rinse and, only then, the towel's usual programme. What makes them permanent is hot water, industrial washing and the tumble dryer applied to the untreated stain. Make-up follows the same rule.
The measure that saves the most towels, however, is not in the laundry: it is giving guests a dark towel for make-up and self-tan, and separating stained towels when the room is stripped. This guide explains why self-tan stains in a different way, how to prevent it and the step-by-step protocol for white terry. If the make-up stain is on the sheets or the pillowcases, the procedure is in how to remove make-up and lipstick stains from sheets.
Why self-tan stains differently
The active ingredient in almost all self-tanners is dihydroxyacetone (DHA). According to the review by Turner and colleagues published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology (2022), products usually contain between 4 % and 8 % DHA, which reacts with the amino groups of the proteins in the outer layer of the skin and forms brown pigments. It is a Maillard-type reaction, the same family of reactions that browns bread, although the authors point out that its exact mechanism in the skin is still debated. Many foams and mousses also carry a "guide colour": a pigment that shows the user where the product has been applied.
When a guest dries off or removes make-up with a towel after applying self-tan, three things reach the terry at once:
- The guide colour, a pigment that behaves like any cosmetic dye.
- The product base: creams, oils or silicones that hold the pigment on the fibre.
- DHA that has not yet reacted and skin residue, which is precisely what it reacts with.
That is why a self-tan stain is a combined stain: it has a greasy part, a pigment part and a chemical part that can darken with time and heat. And that is why a towel that shows only a faint tint when it is collected can come out of the tumble dryer with a clearly visible orange or brown mark.
Make-up is simpler: oil or silicone with pigment. But a towel has an aggravating factor that a sheet does not: terry is a looped fabric with a lot of surface, and foundation and mascara stay inside the loop. Rubbing with a stiff brush pushes the product further in and also pulls at the loops.
Heat sets the stain, and industrial washing applies a lot of heat
The stain removal guides from US university extension services say it without qualification. The one from New Mexico State University (Guide C-502, revised in 2019) says that "heat sets stains" and that a stained fabric should not be ironed or tumble dried; the one from Texas A&M warns that if a stained garment goes through the dryer, the stain "may become impossible to remove".
In hospitality the effect is multiplied. According to the British linen recovery company Regenex, as reported by the magazine Laundry & Cleaning Today (2023), up to a fifth of the items it received arrived with self-tan marks; in 2026, according to Luxury Hospitality magazine, the estimate was approaching a quarter. The same source explains that commercial laundry processes "cannot avoid setting" these stains, so repeated washes no longer remove them. These are figures from a company that sells the recovery service, and from the British market, but they describe the mechanism well: a stained towel that goes untreated into the hot cycle comes out with the stain set.
For our white towels, the product sheet states a maximum wash of 60 °C, no bleach, washed separately, and tumble drying is allowed. That is the right programme for a clean towel; for a stained towel, the cold pre-treatment has to come first.
Prevention: the dark towel and sorting at check-out

- A towel for make-up and self-tan. A dark-coloured vanity or hand towel, placed separately and marked with a discreet card: "To remove make-up or after applying self-tan, please use this towel". Guests who find it use it; those who do not use the white one or the pillowcase. The range of coloured towels includes dark shades that do this job.
- Think about the next morning. Self-tan is usually applied at night and the colour keeps developing for hours. The pieces that suffer most are the towel from the morning shower and the pillowcase.
- Sort when stripping the room. The housekeeping team checks the towels as they collect them and puts any with marks in a separate bag. A stain spotted at the trolley is treated in minutes; spotted when the clean towel is being folded, it has already been through the heat. If your linen marking system already tells batches apart, you can add this circuit: we explain it in how to mark bed linen and towels.
- In spas and beauty centres that apply tanning. Coloured towels and treatment-couch sheets, kept for that room and washed separately. Organising textiles by zone is covered in textiles for spas and beauty clinics.
The protocol for a stained white towel

- Set it aside and do not dry it. The stained towel does not go in the general sack or the tumble dryer, even if it is damp.
- Rinse cold from the reverse side. Cold water from the side opposite the stain, so that the product leaves the way it came in. If the stain is large, leave the area to soak in cold water for about 30 minutes.
- Degrease. Apply a little liquid detergent or clear washing-up liquid to the area and work it in with your fingers, without a stiff brush. Leave it to act for 15 to 30 minutes.
- Rinse cold again and look at the area against the light.
- If an orange tint remains. An oxygen-based stain remover as a soak, at the dose and temperature on the pack, provided the towel's label does not rule out all bleaching agents. Never bleach on our white towels: the product sheet says "do not use bleach".
- Wash on the usual terry programme, separately, at the temperature on the label.
- Check before drying. In daylight, not under the warm light of the linen room. If a shadow remains, go back to step 3 while the towel is still damp. A shadow that goes through the tumble dryer will not come out.
If the mark is still there after two full treatments, the towel leaves the guest-room circuit. It can carry on in service as a cleaning cloth or for internal use; what it must not do is go back to a guest's bathroom with a brown shadow.
Each stain, its first step
| Stain on the towel | What holds it | First step | What not to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fresh self-tan | Cosmetic base, guide colour and DHA | Cold rinse and soak, then degreaser | Hot water or tumble dryer |
| Self-tan already washed | Brown pigment set in the fibre | Oxygen-based soak if the label allows it | Repeating hot washes hoping it will come out |
| Foundation | Oil or silicone with pigment | Degreaser on the area, without rubbing | Stiff brush on the terry |
| Mascara and eyeliner | Wax and black pigment | Degreaser; for waterproof ones, dabs of isopropyl alcohol tested first on a hem | Spreading the stain with a cloth |
| Lipstick | Wax, oil and pigment | Remove the excess with a spatula and degrease | Heat before it has gone |
There is one stain that gets confused with these and is not one of them: pale, orange or pink marks caused by cosmetics containing peroxide, which bleach the dye instead of adding colour. In water stains on towels we explain how to tell them apart from limescale and product residue.
If your linen goes to an outside laundry
An industrial laundry washes terry with heat and chemicals, and dries in a tunnel or a tumble dryer. That is exactly the circuit that sets an untreated self-tan stain. Three measures prevent it:
- Send the stained towels in a separate, labelled bag instead of mixing them with the rest.
- Ask whether they apply a pre-wash or a stain treatment before the hot programme, and whether they charge extra for it.
- If they do not, carry out steps 1 to 5 in the linen room before handing the linen over.
Temperatures and chemicals for washing terry are covered in how to wash hospitality textiles.
Frequently asked questions
Can you use bleach to remove self-tan from a white towel?
On our white towels, no: the product sheet says "do not use bleach". On any towel, follow its label. If the label allows oxygen bleaches, they are the option for the orange tint left after degreasing.
Why does the stain look worse after washing?
Because the greasy part and the guide colour may partly come out, while the part that has reacted, or keeps reacting with heat, stays in the fibre. A towel with a faint shadow that goes into a hot wash without pre-treatment can come out with a more defined mark.
Is it enough to use coloured towels throughout the bathroom?
They disguise the stain but do not prevent it, and they change the look of the bathroom. The usual solution is to keep white and add a single marked dark towel for make-up and self-tan.
Can you charge the guest for a stained towel?
In the United Kingdom it has been suggested, although it is hard to apply and to explain. If you decide to do it, it must be in your terms before the booking. In practice, the dark towel saves more upset than any charge.
In short
Self-tan stains with grease, pigment and a chemical reaction that heat completes. Prevent it with a marked dark towel and by separating stained towels at check-out; treat cold, degrease, rinse and check in daylight before drying. A towel that reaches the dryer clean causes no trouble; one that arrives with a shadow does.
